Katherine and Bastian

Football fan Katherine.

I was actually very surprised when I first talked to Katherine and she told me she loves German football. Then she even threw some names at me like Schweinsteiger and Lahm, and I knew that girl isn’t joking!

Katherine is from China and it turns out that she is a real sports fan. She doesn’t like Chinese football so much though, her favourite football club is – again – German! It is the biggest one in Germany, FC Bayern München.

Maybe at some point I will play a song to Katherine which says that there are many options in life but one thing is a no go: to join the FC Bayern! If the lyrics weren’t German. But I don’t think that would affect Katherine’s love to the club anyway. Guess who her favourite football player is. Or listen!

Why not start with a Red Dragon?

Red Dragon Sculpture on top of the Bute Building in Cardiff.

Last Friday, me and Yunjia (you can call her Katherine) went on a sculpture hunt.  Trainee broadcast journalist exercising. It was pretty rainy, but the Red Dragon Sculpture lived up to its name and was nice and red in all that grey. Katherine even called it ‘cute’.

You can find the sculpture near Cardiff City Centre where the Red Dragon is standing strong on the Bute Building’s front pillars, holding its metal wings upright. The Bute Building opened in 1916 and is now Grade 2 listed. It has a history of being home to Cardiff Technical College, the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology and to the Welsh School of Architecture. The sculpture was only commissioned in the early 1980s, but it’s no surprise that the Red Dragon’s claw is holding on to some technical accessory – a gear wheel!

Listen below to what Katherine says about the symbolic meaning of dragons. Maybe we should all get one.
